Sedation Dentistry in St. Catharines Ontario

If you get anxious or scared about your dental checkup, sedation dentistry may be an appropriate solution for you. Sedation dentistry uses a number of sedation methods to ease your worries and relax you during your procedure. Dental sedation may be appropriate for patients who are extremely anxious or fearful about seeing the dentist. It may also be suitable for patients who require extensive surgery or who need more than one procedure performed during the same appointment.
Depending on your specific needs and overall health, your dentist may recommend a specific dental sedation for you. Some people with certain health conditions, such as cardiac disease, hypertension and diabetes may require clearance from their physician before they can be given sedation.
We offer a number of sedation methods:
Nitrous oxide - Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is the most common type of sedation that is used in dental practices. It is highly effective at relieving pain and anxiety during your procedure. It is inhaled through a gas mask which puts you in a relaxed conscious state.
Enteral Sedation - Also called oral sedation, this form of sedation requires the patient to ingest a pill or liquid prior to their appointment. This puts the patient in a comfortable relaxed state. It is usually used in conjunction with nitrous oxide to reduce anxiety.
IV Sedation - This form of sedation is given through an IV and puts the patient in a deep state of sedation. The patient will still remain awake but may drift in and out of consciousness.
General Anesthesia - This form of sedation is also called sleep dentistry since it puts the patient to sleep during their procedure. As a result, it will take some time for the sedative to wear off.
Following a comprehensive examination, we will recommend the appropriate sedation method for your needs. Contact our practice in St Catharines to speak with us today.
